Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down the exact technique behind that punch, the same hook that helped him win his own Olympic medal. Breaking Down Roy Jones Jr.'s Lead Hook: The Technique: throwing the hook with your thumb up cuts down on rotational movement, letting you transfer your weight to the back foot and snap the arm out fast, which is exactly why Roy could throw several lead hooks in a row. Why Jones' Hook Lands: Roy backed the hook with a real cross, an uppercut, and a body shot, so opponents could never just keep their hands up, since covering one punch always opened another. The Leaping Lead Hook: Roy would jab to bait a parry, then explode forward with his feet before the opponent could reset, landing the hook while they were still processing the jab. The setup shot: a hard hook to the head was never meant to knock anyone out, it was meant to force the elbows up so the body underneath was wide open for the next shot.
